FOREST RESEARCH CENTRE (CIFOR)
The Forest Research Centre of INIA has the functions of scientific research, technological development and innovation, scientific-technical training, national and international cooperation and the provision of scientific-technical services related to the field of forestry.
Its mission is to generate scientific and technological based knowledge on key raw materials (wood, cork, aromatic and medicinal plants, and pulp and paper) and forest products. Research activities include characterization of raw forest products, environmental, energetic and technological optimization of transformation processes, the life cycle analysis of products and their improvement. Examples of recent research studies are the enological characterization of Spanish oak, the application of biotechnology for a sustainable paper industry, the behavior of timber in construction, the characterization of cork products or the study of the effectiveness of wood protectors against sapstain, wood decay fungi and pests.
Its activities are closely related to primary forest industry and to other sectors such as construction in timber, barrel and cork industries for wine, paper mills or graphic arts. As a consequence of this close association with the Spanish industries, an important activity is the technological support to forest industries, institutions and government bodies. Structural Timber Testing Laboratory has external accreditation based on ISO 17025 and it is UE officially notified for CE marking of wood products. Pulp and Paper laboratories are CEPI qualified laboratory.
